To ensure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience when observing at a NHAC site, we ask that everyone please follow these guidelines:
THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP! ENJOY YOUR VISIT!
- There should be no smoking in the vicinity of the telescopes. Smoke can harm telescope optics, and can be quite irritating to some people. If you must smoke, please smoke only downwind from the observing area, and take your cigarette butts with you when you leave.
- Likewise, if you use aerosol sprays such as insect repellent, please use them downwind from the observing area. Wind-borne spray particles can also harm optical equipment.
- Do not use white lights after sunset. It takes time for a person’s eyes to become fully dark adapted, and white light will ruin this dark adaptation. You cannot see fainter objects unless your eyes are fully dark adapted. Only dim red lights are allowed on the observing field. Once your eyes have adapted, you will be able to find your way around in the dark.
- Regarding car headlights; there is nothing worse to the observer than bright headlights shining in their eyes. Try to arrive before sunset, if possible. If you do arrive after sunset, please turn off your headlights before approaching the main observing area. The same rule applies when you leave, since others may still be observing. Turn on your headlights only after you have left the main observing area. However, remember SAFETY FIRST! If you can't see, do not proceed. Stop, step out of your car and look around to get acclimated. Keep your running lights on, and dashboard lights turned down to the dimest setting so you can see out. Minimize any auto movement while you are at the site.
- The event organizers may have established "light windows", when it is anticipated that cars may come and go with lights on. Plan your time accordingly.
- If you have any trash, take it with you when you leave. No littering!
- NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY! It is prohibited after sunset, since the flash may ruin the night vision for all persons in the area.
- Please supervise your children! Children are welcome at the observing site, but younger ones may get lost or injured if allowed to wander around in the dark. They could also accidentally bump into someone’s expensive equipment.
- Should you choose to bring a pet it must be kept on a leash at all times. Loose animals can be a nuisance to other members and their children. There is also livestock roaming the O'Brien site. Pets not accustomed to this could pose problems.
- Please respect the equipment of other observers. Do not touch another person’s equipment without permission, and especially avoid touching the optical surfaces of eyepieces. If you have children present, please caution them about this rule also.
- No alcoholic beverages, fireworks, or firearms are permitted in the observing site.
- Proper conduct is essential. Rowdy or disruptive behavior is not permitted. Members are accountable for the actions of their guests.
- If you want to listen to music, please use your own personal headphones.
